Town and Village of Montgomery in talks to share treatment plant

The Town of Montgomery and Village of Montgomery could possibly be in the works to share a brand new wastewater treatment plant.

Due to capacity issues, Montgomery is a few years away from potentially not being able to accept new commercial or residential development planning board applications. Town of Montgomery Supervisor Brian Maher seems to have the solution, and it involves shutting down the town’s current plant.

Maher explains that both the village and town need to do something about the capacity issues, and if they both do it on their own, they are looking at million dollar plants being built down the road from each other.

Plans have been floating around for a few years, but Maher mentions what building a new plant in the town would entail. “If you go from [roughly] 160,000 gallons per day or something like that to about 250,000 gallons per day, it’s about 90,000 gallons per day, and you’re spending about $15 to $20 million,” said Maher.

Maher thinks collaboration is the best bet.

“It makes more sense to work together to figure out what the collective need is and what future growth might be. Then the town could work with the village to save the Village of Montgomery taxpayer money. What they would do is create more users to pay for the borrowing and the bond itself. It’s a win-win if the two municipalities can work together,” said Maher.

The Town of Montgomery has worked with engineers and they will be attending the November 17 work session to discuss this further.
