Two Vikings achieve lacrosse milestones

Two days and two milestones for the Valley Central girls’ lacrosse team.

Senior Kiera McPhillips scored her 100th varsity goal in the Vikings’ 15-7 win over the Cornwall Dragons on April 14, while her teammate, junior Becky Sibley followed the next day in the Vikings’ 9-7 win over Guilderland.

Both were accomplished at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.

“It’s such an honor and I’m proud of both of us,” McPhillips said. “We’ve put in so much work over these past four or five years we’ve been on the team, and it just means a lot to both of us, We have such a great coaching staff to get us to this point. Our teammates have pushed us to get here, too.”

McPhillips’ 100th came during a three-goal effort against the Dragons.

“I was really excited,” McPhillips said. “I was playing against a couple of my travel teammates. It was really special to have everyone there. All my family and friends came out and it meant a lot to me.”

Sibley had scored three goals of her own in the game against Cornwall, leaving her at 97 career goals heading into the Guilderland game the next morning, leaving her unsure if that noontime Saturday game was going to be her day.

“You never know if you’re going to get a hat trick or not,” Sibley said.

Well, she did, and she knew she needed three. She got the first two before some nerves started to set in. Her parents were able to tell she was shaky by the way she was catching the ball.

Then she got the third goal, and the nervous energy erupted into excitement as she jumped into a teammate’s arms in celebration.

“I was very excited,” Sibley said. “I couldn’t explain how I felt. I was so shocked that I finally did it because it felt like it was so far away.”

Sibley was actually involved in both milestones in a direct way. The previous day, she fed the assist to McPhillips as she scored her 100th goal. That made it even more special.

“I was excited to assist it because, not that I was a part of it, but I’m happy to help her get that goal,” Sibley said. “I was just super excited to share that with her in that moment. I passed it and I got to watch it.”

They are part of a Vikings’ team that has high aspirations for 2023. They’ve won five of their first seven games to start the season. Their only losses have come to James I. O’Neill and the Warwick Wildcats.

The Wildcats ended their season in 2022 in the Section 9 Class B semifinals.

They won their only game last week, 18-3, over Pine Bush. They were scheduled to host Monroe-Woodbury on Tuesday.

“I’m very confident with where we are,” McPhillips said. “I think we just play day-by-day to get to our goal. We work hard and we practice every day the best that we can. We want to win.”
