Umberto J. Salerno, 72, of Montgomery  passed away suddenly at his home Monday, September 19, 2022, in Montgomery.

He was born August 5, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY to Evelyn Ericsen and Joseph Salerno.

Bert graduated from Lafayette High School and went on to join the NYPD. His tireless work in the 24th Precinct led to a quick promotion to the Street Crimes Undercover Unit. His exceptional level of service was reflected in a multitude of Departmental Recognitions for Excellence in Police Duty culminating in a Departmental Commendation and the award of Departmental Medal of Valor from Police Benevolent Association. He retired as a detective sergeant after 24 years of service.

Devoted to his faith, Bert was an active participant in weekend cursillos at St. Paul’s Center in Douglaston, NY, where he found solace and supported men through challenges they faced. His kindness and compassion had impacts that continue to resonate today.

Bert was a parishioner at Holy Name of Mary-Assumption, Montgomery, NY, where he attended services multiple times a week.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Liliane Tumminia, daughter Kimberly (Russell) Petro, son Joseph-John Salerno (Honore Mann), five grandsons, who were the light of his life, Carter, Joseph, Hunter, Michael, & Christopher, and four brothers John, Joseph, Stephen and Paul.

A funeral mass will take place Monday, September 26, 2022, at 10:30am, at Holy Name of Mary-Assumption, 89 Union St., Montgomery.

Cremation will take place privately.
