VC Assistant Superintendent to retire June 30

Marianne Serratore, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Valley Central School District, is retiring as of June 30, 2023.

The Valley Central school board accepted her retirement on May 17 according to school board president Joseph Bond, who declined further comment.

Serratore was the center of controversy last spring, when an ad hoc group of parents called for the removal of top administrators in the district – specifically Serratore, and then-Superintendent John Xanthis. The latter was targeted by the group for his response to an emailed threat to the Montgomery Elementary School. He abruptly retired, a few days before graduation last year.

The former had been criticized by supporters of Tammy Coleman, the district’s director of its Universal Pre-K program who they believed was being unfairly terminated. Following considerable public pressure, the board voted to give Coleman a new three-year contract in lieu of tenure.

Reached for comment on her retirement, Serratore said it was “not newsworthy.”
