It took more than the allotted 48 minutes, but the Valley Central boys’ lacrosse team got out of Wallkill with their victory.

Jack Sherry scored the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Vikings outlasted the Wallkill Panthers, 20-19, on Thursday at Robinson Field.

Sherry finished the game with three goals and one assist for the Vikings, who also got three goals and two assists from Dylan Butcher. Connor Stafford led all scorers with six goals. Julian Rodriguez had two goals and Bryson Antal added four. Danny Latimer had two goals and two assists. Colin Kingsley registered one assist.

Landon Santangelo made 17 saves for the Vikings.

Colin McCartney led the Panthers with seven goals and two assists, and Richie Martinez added six goals. John Canavan had four goals, and T.J. Mazzetti had one goal and one assist. Brent DeCouer had an assist, and Mason Ondreyko had one goal and three assists.

Alec Petrocelli-Henry made 20 saves and Chris McNair added three.

It wasn’t easy to force this game into overtime, as the Panthers took an early command with a 4-2 first quarter lead and then built an eight-goal lead before the Vikings pulled to within three goals at halftime, a lead they maintained heading into the fourth quarter.

However, the Vikings held the Panthers to a single goal by McCartney in the fourth quarter. Stafford scored two of his goals in the fourth quarter and Sherry had one, while Antal delivered the game-tying goal to knot the score at 19.

That set the stage for Sherry’s game-winner, an unassisted goal that sent the Vikings back to Montgomery happy.

The Panthers suffered their third straight loss of the season on Saturday when they suffered a 15-14 road loss to the Red Hook Raiders.

After getting off to a 7-1 start, the Panthers have lost three in a row, heading into this week’s opener against Monroe-Woodbury on Monday. They will also head to Washingtonville on Wednesday.

The Vikings will visit the Warwick Wildcats on Wednesday before paying the Arlington Admirals a visit on Saturday to make up a rained-out game on May 2.
