Vikings win Section 9 gymnastics title

The newest team on the Section 9 gymnastics scene took home the championship on Saturday.

The Valley Central Vikings won the Section 9 championship meet on Saturday afternoon with 160.2 points at Ziggy’s Gymnastics Academy in Middletown.

The Vikings only crowned one champion, but placed enough gymnasts in the top six to beat the second-place Kingston Tigers by 21.4 points.

The Wallkill Panthers placed a close third with 132.45 points, with Marlee McCollough winning three of the four events to win the all-around championship with 35.05 points. McCullough won the vault, balance beam and the floor exercises. She finished second in the uneven bars.

Reilly Benson got the Vikings only win when she placed first in the uneven bars with a score of 8.5. Benson placed second in the vault, and the balance beam to place second all-around with 34.25 points.

McCullough, Benson, Valley Central’s Bailey Badendyck, Kaylee Benson and Eleanor O’Neill qualified for the upcoming New York State Public High School championship meet on March 5 at Kenmore West High School. In addition to McCollough, Wallkill’s Liz Kellner qualified for the state meet.

O’Neil and Badendyck were fifth and sixth in the all-around. Badendyck was third in the vault and O’Neill was fourth on the vault. Punch was second in the uneven bars and fifth on the balance beam. Kaylee Benson was fifth on the uneven bars, third on the balance beam and second on the floor.

Kellner was third in the floor exercise.
