It was a week of contrasts for the Wallkill High School varsity girls basketball team, marked by a resounding victory and a challenging defeat.
The Panthers kicked off the week with a dominant 69-34 win over Rondout Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Wallkill showcased their offensive firepower, with standout performances across the board. Senior guard Zoe Mesuch led the charge, delivering a stellar performance that helped Wallkill secure their third victory of the season.
However, the momentum shifted on Friday, Jan. 10, as the Panthers fell to Our Lady of Lourdes, 60-44. Despite the loss, Mesuch continued to impress, nearly recording a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds. She contributed half of Wallkill’s points, marking her eighth consecutive game with more than a third of the team’s scoring.
Sophomore forward Beatrice Hunter added 10 points and five rebounds, providing a solid effort on both ends of the court.
The defeat against Lourdes marked Wallkill’s third loss in four games, dropping their season record to 3-5. Lourdes improved to 6-3 with the win, extending their own streak to two games.
Looking ahead, the Panthers are set to host Catskill on Monday at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Johnson City for a Saturday afternoon matchup.
