The Wallkill Central School District has proposed a tax levy of 1.99%, $395,480 below the tax levy limit and the proposed budget increase was proposed at 4.59%. The proposed working budget was $85.4 million for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year for Wallkill.

Brian Devincenzi, Wallkill Assistant Superintendent for Support Services, reported that the Board of Education met on March 22, to review the proposed district spending plan but as of now, New York State has not approved a budget. The proposed budget was based on what was discussed in March. Despite the wait, Devincenzi was confident in the financial position of the district.

Superintendent Kevin Castle noted that with the district budget this would include two sections of an in-house Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) program with a maximum class size of 18 students per section, a district wide social worker, a full-time athletic trainer and Unified Sports program. The students within this program would be determined by a lottery system.

Devincenzi announced to the board that budget presentations would be commencing soon. The first meeting will be held on May 2nd at Leptondale Parent with Teacher Organization [PTO] presentation at 7 p.m. May 3 will have a meeting at Ostrander Elementary with a PTO presentation at 7p.m.

May 4 there will be a public budget hearing at 7p.m. in the Wallkill Senior High School Library and finally on May 8 there will be a meeting at Plattekill Elementary School with Parent Teacher Association presentation at 7: p.m. The Wallkill budget vote will take place on May 16, from 12p.m. to 9p.m. Polling sites will be located at the Leptondale Elementary School, Plattekill Elementary School and Wallkill Senior High School.
