Wallkill’s Martinez earns an honorable mention

Wallkill boys’ lacrosse coach Alex Danon asks his attackmen to do two things: score goals and ride hard when the other team tries to clear the ball.

Richie Martinez has done both for the Wallkill boys’ lacrosse team. Even though the Panthers were unable to repeat as Section 9 Class C champions and advance in the state tournament, Martinez was still rewarded by the New York State Sports Writers Association as an honorable mention to the all-state team.

Martinez finished the season with 99 points. He scored 75 goals and registered 24 assists. He finished his junior career with 95 goals and 32 assists for a total of 127 points.

He also finished second on the team with 70 ground balls and caused 26 turnovers.

“Both are very rare for an attackman, but it goes to show how complete his game is,” Danon said.

With his combination of size, strength and speed, he made for a difficult matchup for opposing teams.

He also was selected a first-team all-section attackman, U.S. Lacrosse All-American.
