WCC pays tribute to Walden’s finest

The Walden Community paid tribute to our men in blue during National Police Week. Matthew Flanagan, Vice-President of WCC, presented 3 trays of cookies from Calculated Confections (one for each shift) to Chief William Herlihy. Please take the time to pay tribute to our Walden P. D. for all they do to keep us safe.

Our faithful correspondent, Xander Macri, sends word that the Walden Fire Department made the following calls in April 2022: Automatic Alarms - 4; Assist Fires - 2; Outside Fire - 1; Carbon Monoxide Alarms - 2; Structure Fires - 4; Motor Vehicle Accidents - 2; Request Fire Department - 1; and Brush Fire - 1. Walden Rotary Club members send Happy Anniversary wishes to Brian and Becky Maher as they celebrate their special day on May 20; and Happy Anniversary to Tina and David Johnson as they celebrate their special day on May 26. Both couples are wished all life’s best!

The Walden Community Council is currently accepting orders for bricks to be placed at Walden Veterans Memorial Park. Orders received by July 15, 2022, will be placed in the Park for dedication at the Veterans Day Ceremony in November, 2022. Forms are available on the Village of Walden website, Walden Community Council Facebook page, and by mail or email upon request. Surprise a veteran with a gift they will love. You are all invited to attend the Walden Historical Society meeting on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor Bradley Assembly Hall of the Walden Municipal Building. Ray Kelly, guest speaker will present a slide program on the Newburgh - Walden Trolley which encompasses a journey from the Newburgh waterfront to Walden with a stop at the Orange Lake Amusement Park.Mr. Kelly is a Trolley Historian and a member of the O & W Railroad Historical Society.

Looking ahead, Walden P. B. A. President Craig Dudas sends word that the Walden Police P. B. A. will host their 2nd Annual Bike Rodeo at Wooster Grove Memorial Park on Saturday, May 21, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. There will be an obstacle course, bicycle registration and safety inspections available to riders as well as injury protection tips for riders. There will also be chances to win many great raffle prizes. This event is not to be missed - save the date!

The Walden American Legion Post 158 in conjunction with the Walden Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2946 look forward to co-sponsoring the annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 30. William Kirnan, Commander of the Walden American Legion invites any civic organization to join in this annual celebration. Email Bill at wkirnan@frontiernet.net.

The parade will form at the west end of Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at 9:30 a.m. with step off tentatively at 10 a.m. The parade will proceed across the bridge up West Main Street to Walnut Street turn right onto Walnut Street and proceed to the platform in Municipal Square where a formal program will take place. Let’s all come out and pay tribute to our great veterans!

Our Classic Feature Film of the month will be On the Waterfront starring Marlon Brando, Eva Maria Saint, Karl Malden and directed by Elia Kazan. The movie is indeed a powerhouse and a “contenda” as one of the finest dramas filmed. “An ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, including his older brother…”. The production took place during the height of the McCarthy era. Enjoy the film with us on Friday, May 27, 6 p.m.
