Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus has named Town of Newburgh resident Andrew H. Brew Sr. as July’s Citizen of the Month Award recipient.

Brew, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, was recognized for his dedication to local veterans and service to the country.

“I had the honor of meeting Mr. Brew at a ceremony to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War in April and was greatly moved by his pride in serving our country during that conflict,” Neuhaus said. “I enjoyed reconnecting with Andrew and recognizing him with this well-deserved award. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of our service members, and I commend him for his support of and advocacy for our veterans.”

Brew, 88, has been a member of American Legion Post 1308 in Pine Bush for 30 years and he volunteered at dinners and other functions, while cooking at barbecues and marching in parades over the years. Brew has also led Post 1308’s efforts to attain State grants to provide its facility with new siding, new handicap bathrooms, a new kitchen, handicap ramps, a new furnace and air conditioning.

Brew served as Commander of Post 1308 for seven years and Orange County’s Commander for a year. He was named District 9’s 2022 Legionnaire of the Year and has been nominated to be this year’s State Legionnaire of the Year. Brew graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and joined the Air Force at age 17 in 1953, serving two tours in Vietnam. He retired in 1973 and worked at Stewart Air Force Base’s Water Treatment Plant and the United States Military Academy at West Point as a building inspector, retiring in 1995.

Brew and his wife, Ruby, have been married for 67 years.

“I want to thank County Executive Neuhaus for taking the time to acknowledge my service and my work with the veteran’s community,” Brew said. “I am very proud to be a veteran and take great pride in working with my brothers and sisters in the veteran’s community. We appreciate the County Executive’s continued support of us and thank him for caring deeply about issues we face.”
