Cameron Roth is having her best year

Cameron Roth is playing in her final matches on Newburgh’s girls’ golf team, and the senior joined the team as a freshman.

“She is having her best year,” said Pete Marotta, Newburgh’s coach, as the team was preparing to play New Paltz and Minisink at Apple Greens last week.

Roth hits the ball well off the tee and in the fairway, and her personality, said Marotta, helps her handle the sport’s mental rigors.

“She’s calm. She’s even keeled. She does not get too up or too down,” he said. “She is very accurate off the tee, and just ball striking in general.”

Roth started playing when she was 13 with her father. And this season, Reagan, her younger sister, is playing with her for Newburgh’s varsity team.

Roth may be consistent hitting the ball straight and far, but golf also has a short game to handle inclines and finishing on the green, and that’s where she’s worked hard to improve her game.

“I definitely have gotten way better at chipping and putting,” she said. “You can tell that’s where the game definitely changes you.”

Roth competed as a diver for Newburgh this winter before heading back to the golf course this spring. And now she is spending more time with her sister playing a game she enjoys.
“I love it. It is so much fun. I get to play with my family,” she said. “It is good bonding time.”
Roth is headed to South Carolina’s Clemson University to study marketing and advertising. After a year of college, she wants to walk on the golf team there as a sophomore

“I’ll figure out more when I get the feel for college,” she said, ”before I start and jump into a sport.”
