City police chief relieved of duties

Posted

Last Wednesday, Doug Solomon was confirmed to be relieved of his duties as City of Newburgh Police Chief.

The decision to relieve Solomon of his duties came shortly after a major shooting on March 27; 26-year-old Tyrell Fincher was shot and killed by the police, and an officer was shot in the shoulder. The shooting resulted in an explosive community reaction.

The conduct of the officers is currently under investigation by Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, the New York State Attorney General, and the New York State police. There will be two parallel investigations of the case; one in front of the Orange County Grand Jury, and the other within Hoovler’s office. There is no confirmed link between the shooting and the relieving of Solomon.

The city has not yet responded to requests for comment.
