Goldbacks look to defend tennis title

The Newburgh Free Academy boys’ tennis team enters the 2023 season looking to defend its divisional title.

They’re also going to turn their eye toward a Section 9 team championship.

A part of that plan also entails getting as many individuals and doubles teams into the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Section 9 tournaments as possible.

The Goldbacks have lost Michael Deyo from last year’s team, but return New York State qualifier Aarav Shah, who placed third at the Section 9 tournament, but was eliminated immediately from state competition.

Shah will be surrounded by returning senior Emilien Boyer and sophomore Henry Goings-Perrot. New to the team will be seventh-grader Jake Radenmacher.

“We are a team that works extremely hard in practice,” Newburgh coach Arturo Santana said. “The student/athletes are dedicated and demonstrate their passion for the game of tennis.”

The Goldbacks opened their season last week with matches against the James I. O’Neill Raiders and a match Friday against the Washingtonville Wizards.
