Goldbacks may have a Kingston rematch in their future

Posted

As Newburgh’s boys’ basketball team finishes its regular season this week, a game last week against Kingston gave the Goldbacks a taste of how difficult the postseason may be.

If the Goldbacks beat Middletown this week, they could secure the third seed in the Section 9, Class AA tournament. And depending how they do, Kingston may be waiting for them again after stopping the Goldbacks Wednesday, Feb. 13, 74-62.

Kingston had a narrow lead, up 17-14, at the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, Kingston pulled away with the distance it needed to win, leading 35-21 at the half.

“We couldn’t hit a shot,” said Frank Dinnocenzio, Newburgh’s coach.

Caleb Simmons led Newburgh with 21 points, and Unique Hicks helped with 14 points with a pair threes.

But Kingston’s Brian Moore outscored Simmons and Hicks, combined, with 36 points, to frustrate the Goldbacks throughout the evening.

“Defensively we were doing OK. That kid (Moore) was hot. You can’t do much about that,” said Dinnocenzio. “But you have to hit shots.”

Newburgh dropped to 11-7 with the loss to Kingston.
