GOP willing to follow perilous path

I read some most disturbing news from the NY Times provided by the paper’s sources. If Trump is elected President in 2024, he said he would expand Presidential power by seizing authority on all parts of the federal government that, either through tradition or law, have been independently protected from any political interference by the White House. This is no less than an authoritarian model of governance. In this Trump-induced toxic political climate such a dictatorial model for governing is not far-fetched.

After all, even with this startling revelation along with three criminal indictments and possibly more to come, Trump’s support has not diminished. All the polls show Trump far ahead in the GOP primary field of candidates making him the likely 2024 Presidential nominee. The GOP Congressional leadership has joined the ranks of the Trump cult. It continues to defend and support Trump regardless of his Presidential aim of dictatorial rule, regardless of his blatant criminal conduct much of which is self-inflicted. The GOP has clearly surrendered its political soul to Trump thus abandoning its Republican principles. The Republican Party, in word and deed, is now the anti-democracy, anti-rule-of-law, anti-constitution party. It is quite apparent a large swath of the GOP is more than willing to follow Trump down the perilous path of authoritarianism.
