Help for furloughed families

At this writing, the Federal Government’s shutdown had reached 31 days, with no apparent end in sight. That many federal employees are struggling to make ends meet is not news, but we do not realize the size of the growing web that is cast.

The furlough affects not only the Federal employees but also anyone who does business with them. They’ll buy fewer groceries and clothing, forgo music or karate lessons for their children and leave less in the church collection plate. It also impacts contractors who do business with the federal government, like the cleaning service at the FDR Estate in Hyde Park.

We are all hoping for a swift resolution to this shutdown that has lasted far too long. If you are among those affected, there are resources for you and your family.

The New York State Department of Labor has been directed to accelerate the Unemployment Insurance application process. In addition, some furloughed federal workers or federal employees who are still working but not receiving a paycheck may also be eligible for emergency assistance to help meet basic needs through the state’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Even households that are not traditionally eligible for public assistance may be eligible for short-term assistance to help pay rent or buy food if they do not have resources readily available to them due to loss of income.

To see if you qualify or to apply for benefits call 1-888-209-8124 and you will be able to speak with Department of Labor specialists who can assist you in quickly receiving the benefits you need. The call center is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. You can also apply through their website: labor.ny.gov.

The United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is part of a nationwide call network to assist families in need. Anyone can dial 2-1-1 to find the help they need, including food pantries, rent assistance, utility coverage and more. In New York State, the 2-1-1 helpline is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The New York State’s Public Service Commission is working with its various utilities to secure a commitment that no furloughed family will lose service. Central Hudson, New York State Electric and Gas and Orange and Rockland, among others, have all committed to assist federal employees who may be experiencing a financial hardship that makes it difficult for them to pay their energy bills during the government shutdown. Importantly, these utilities have all committed to keeping these provisions in place for the duration of the shutdown and until they get paid.

Many banks are on board. Contact yours if you are struggling to make a mortgage or student loan payment.

Many food pantries are also participating. The Town of Montgomery Food Pantry, located at 220 State Route 208, will provide a three or four day supply of food to any resident of the Valley Central School District who can provide proof of federal employment.

Anyone who needs assistance need not feel embarrassed about accepting it. Help is there for anyone who needs it. Charity truly does begin at home.
