Kingston continues dominance of Newburgh

Newburgh’s baseball team has had some good times this season. The Goldbacks won a season series against Monroe-Woodbury, a league rival, and they went 2-1 in a tournament in Virginia Beach.

The Goldbacks came home and faced Kingston, a league rival and the defending Section 9, Class AA champions, last week.
“It’s always a big rivalry,” said Scott Seabury, Newburgh’s coach. “They are the top dogs and section champs.”

The Goldbacks were about to play Kingston in the final game of their three-game series after losing the first game 12-2 and losing 8-0 in the second game and being no-hit.

“We have to do everything we can to knock them off,” said Seabury, prior to the first pitch Thursday at home.

Kingston continued their dominance with a 4-0 victory as the Goldbacks picked up hits from Dylan Iorlano, Jhovanny Valdez, Liam Bywater and Kevin Wanamaker.

Now the Goldbacks have a few weeks to get it right as they pursue a playoff berth. They finish the season against Washingtonville and Pine Bush, Class AA teams, and Rondout. But before that, the Goldbacks play Middletown in their final league series this week.

“It was not as good as was before this series,” said Seabury, when asked about his team’s playoff chances after the 4-0 loss. “We’re still battling. We have Middletown next week. Middletown beat (Kingston) two out three. So it doesn’t get any easier.”
