Madison Foti scored two goals, but the Newburgh Free Academy girls’ lacrosse team dropped its season opening contest, 10-4, to the Wallkill Panthers on Friday afternoon at Wallkill Senior High School.

The Goldbacks had been scheduled to open their season on Thursday against the New Paltz Huguenots, but the game was postponed.

The Goldbacks gave up the game’s first three goals to Wallkill, as Emma DiLemme opened the scoring slightly more than a minute into the game. The Panthers followed with goals from Grace Winchell and Abigail Martino before Anaya Camacho got Newburgh on the board with the team’s first goal of the season.

However, the Panthers answered with goals from Jazmin Medina and Hallie Yerves to take a 5-1 lead at halftime.

The Goldbacks responded immediately by winning the second half’s opening draw and taking the ball to the cage, setting up Foti’s first goal, just 16 seconds into the second half.

However, goals from DiLemme and Abigail Martin pushed the lead to 7-2.

Foti scored her second goal of the game with 12:17 left.

DiLemme scored two more times and Medina added another to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead before Michelle Prado’s goal with 51 seconds to go gave the Goldbacks their fourth goal.

The Goldbacks will have their toughest test of the young season on Thursday with a road game against the Kingston Tigers.
