Saturday was the first scoring meet for Newburgh Free Academy’s indoor track team at West Point, and the boys and girls found out how well they are doing this season.

For the boys, Ryler Gould won the 600-meter run, and Matthew Haynes won the 1,000-meter run. And the Goldbacks won the 3.200-meter relay.

James Thorpe won the shot put with a distance of 43-feet, 6 inches, and James Onwuka and Kendall Scott went 3-4 in the 300-meter dash. Gould was second in the 55-meter hurdles.

The Lady Goldbacks were fourth in the 3,200-meter and 800-meter relays, and they were fifth in the 1,600-meter relay. Angelissa Diaz was third in the pole vault.

Alasia Ashley, a Newburgh senior, is competing in her final indoor season after playing volleyball in the fall. In the spring, she will run on Newburgh’s outdoor team.

“It’s bittersweet,” she said, of her final indoor season.

Ashley was 7th Saturday in the 55-meter hurdles during an indoor season helping her to prepare for the spring.

“I’ll be stronger outdoors,” Ashley said.
