On August 20, at approximately 1:50 a.m., Troopers from the Montgomery barracks observed 2002 Volvo S-60 traveling southbound on Water Street in the city of Newburgh in an erratic manner.

Troopers initiated a vehicle and traffic stop, at which point the vehicle fled and traveled through several city streets. The vehicle then drove down Washington Street when the operator lost control and struck a telephone pole on Front Street. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Robert A. Johnson, age 33, from the city of Newburgh. While being evaluated by Troopers, he was subsequently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). Troopers learned that Johnson was operating with a suspended license. His blood alcohol content was .17%.

Johnson was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator 3rd degree, and Reckless Driving. He was also issued 21 tickets. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the City of Newburgh Court on September 18, at 9 a.m.
