Newburgh swimmers edge Pine Bush

The win in the 400-yard freestyle relay may have been the event that gave the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ swimming team the in over Pine Bush on Thursday, but the meet was won before that.

It was Ethan Domanico’s win in the 100-yard breaststroke that put the Goldbacks in position for a 96-87 victory.

After Domanico’s breaststroke victory, the Goldbacks outscored the Bushmen 12-2 in the final event.

“It looks good when you win the 400 free relay like that, but the real win was the 100 breast,” Newburgh coach Zach Williams said.

Domanico’s win with the 100-yard breaststroke kept the Goldbacks a point behind the Bushmen. He outswam Pine Bush’s Ian Barth by nearly 2 seconds.

“Winning the 100 breast like that was something I wasn’t sure about,” Williams said. “He’s an upper classman. He had a great swim. That’s what won the meet. The 400 free relay looks good, but I knew we were good going into that, but without Ethan’s 100 breast, I don’t think we get that.”

Domanico was one of several individual swimmers to win two events as the Goldbacks took six individual swims. They also won two of the three relays.

Domanico also won the 200-yard individual medley and was on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Newburgh also got two wins from Luka Samsonov (200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke). Andrew Nieves won the 100-yard freestyle and Kyle German took the 500-yard freestyle.

“I’m glad they responded,” Williams said. “A lot of good wins, and a lot of good races. It’s good for our guys to experience this.”

The Goldbacks have entered this week with four dual meets remaining. They were scheduled to travel to Minisink Valley on Monday, New Paltz on Wednesday and Middletown on Thursday. They will finish the regular season on Jan. 27 at Valley Central.

“It’s definitely been a learning year. I’m happy they’ve been competitive. A meet like this is a big step. It’s nice to do personal bests, but in varsity swimming, the goal’s to win. It’s nice to get these guys to realize that we’re here to compete and to win. I think they’re getting it and doing a better job.”
