Newburgh’s Yan brothers eye state golf titles

The Newburgh Free Academy boys’ golf team has a new coach, but returns its two top golfers.

Dave Doulin moves over from the girls’ team to take over for longtime coach Jim Nee, who retired after the 2023 season.

But even with a new coach, the Goldbacks will look for familiar results as junior Mark Yan and his younger brother, freshman Josh Yan, will return, looking to compete at the state tournament.

Both finished in the top 10 at last year’s state tournament, with Josh shooting better than Mark and taking third and Mark Yan finished in a four-way tie for ninth place. Mark was Section 9 champion, and Josh finished third.

While the Yan brothers have state aspirations, the rest of the team has more local goals in sight.

“As a team, we want to compete for the division championship,” Doulin said. “We feel we have the depth in our lineup and can challenge for the (Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1) championship.”
