NFA boys and girls top VC in cross country

They didn’t win either of the races, but the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams won the team events, beating Valley Central on Sept. 13 at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.

Valley Central’s Jacob Sahlstrom won the boys’ race with a time of 18:23. Devin Batelic finished second to lead the race for Newburgh with a time of 18:39. After the Vikings’ Caleb Sahlstrom finished third, the Goldbacks took fourth through seventh to pull out the victory.
Jordan Hidalgo was fourth, followed by Brady Danyluk, Joe Gaito and Joey Santo.

The Goldbacks were a young team last year, heavy on freshmen, but sixth-year coach Chris Marino said there was plenty to build on, as all of last year’s freshmen have returned for their sophomore seasons.

“Our goal is to keep building the Newburgh running program and build upon a great season last year,” Marino said.

Valley Central’s Ava Carsley and Sydney Remenar finished first and second, but Newburgh took third through sixth to win the girls’ race 26-35.

MaryJane Politi was Newburgh’s top finisher, taking third in 24:02. Natalie Sweat, Alexandra Swink and Julia Coyle finished behind her. Riley Geis finished eighth.
