Two days after clinching a berth in the Section 9 Class AAA tournament, the Newburgh Free Academy girls’ soccer team suffered a 2-1 non-league loss to the Valley Central Vikings on Thursday at NFA North.

Samantha Setteducato led the Vikings to victory with two goals.

She got the Vikings on the board in the 18th minute, when her shot from the right post bounced off a Newburgh defender and went into the goal.

She added her second on a breakaway 14 minutes later.

It wasn’t long before the Newburgh offense cut the Vikings’ lead in half.

About 90 seconds after Setteducato gave the Vikings a two-goal lead, Riley Frederick’s goal got the Goldbacks on the board.

The Goldbacks had two opportunities to tie the game.

The first came in the 45th minute when Marina Parodo came down the left side and sent a crossing pass, which found Frederick in front of the goal. However, her shot went wide left.

Frederick then created a scoring opportunity as she came toward the goal from the left side, but her own crossing pass across the goalmouth didn’t find a Newburgh foot.

The Vikings double-teamed Parodo, Newburgh’s all-time leading scorer, and kept her off the board.

Newburgh goalkeepers Jocelyn Velasquez and Taryn Judson combined to make six saves.

The Goldbacks clinched their sectional berth on OctOBER 10 with a 9-0 win over the Middletown Middies.

Julia Lopez led the Goldbacks with two goals. Julia Leonard, Emily Leonard, Taylor Morill, Madison Foti, Damaris Moran, Michelle Prado and Taryn Judson had a goal each for Newburgh.

The Goldbacks finished the regular season this week with a non-league game against the FDR Presidents and played their Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I Finale against the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders on Tuesday. They will finish the regular season on Thursday with a non-league road game against the Washingtonville Wizards.

Newburgh expects to be seeded third in the sectional tournament and are expected to take on the Pine Bush Bushmen in the semifinals.
