Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Thursday, December 21, 2023, Carlos Flores-Banegas, 31, of Newburgh, was sentenced in Orange County Court to an aggregate term of three years in prison and three years of post-release supervision in relation to his guilty pleas to Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree and Aggravated Family Offense. District Attorney Hoovler further announced that on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Kevin Salaman, 34, of Mount Hope, was sentenced in Orange County Court to one and a half to three (1.5-3) years in prison in relation to his guilty plea to Criminal Contempt in the First Degree.
As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on December 16, 2022, in the City of Newburgh, Carlos Flores-Banegas entered into the home of a former intimate partner, in violation of an order of protection. The victim was able to exit the apartment and lock the defendant inside. However, he was able to flee before the police arrived. On January 11, 2023 Flores-Banegas returned to the same apartment, knocked on the window and engaged in an argument with the victim. He then lifted open the window and pried metal bars open enough to enter into the apartment. Inside, the defendant proceeded to grab the victim by her hair, punched her in the face and broke her cell phone. The defendant again fled before police arrived and was not apprehended until May 15, 2023.
As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on January 5, 2023, in the Town of Mount Hope, Kevin Salaman engaged in a verbal argument with his girlfriend, in violation of an order of protection. As the argument escalated, Salaman threw boxes and a TV remote at the victim while she was holding their infant child. He thereafter made threats to the victim regarding her family. Salaman fled before the police arrived. He was later taken into custody.

“Home is the one place where everyone deserves to feel safe,” said Hoovler. “I commend the bravery of the survivors in these cases who came forward and were heard. For those who refuse to abide by orders of the court, prison sentences, such as those imposed in these cases, are often an appropriate outcome. My office will continue to support victims of domestic violence by aggressively prosecuting those responsible for these crimes. I urge all victims of domestic violence to seek out the support available to them by contacting law enforcement, my office or organizations such as Fearless! Hudson Valley who are there to assist.”
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Kontos.
