Stage is set for June GOP primary

Colin Schmitt of New Windsor will seek the Town Supervisor seat this coming fall and will be running on the Republican and Conservative Party lines. Schmitt will face supervisor candidate Stephen Bedetti in a Republican Primary Election on June 27, and the General Election will take place on November 7.

“The Town of New Windsor needs new, energized, competent leadership to secure its future. I have had the privilege to serve and represent my neighbors in New Windsor at the state and local level and now I am ready to step up and serve as Town Supervisor. With unmatched knowledge and experience to run local government, I am ready to run and will win any primary or general election campaign necessary to serve this wonderful town my wife and I care deeply about. I thank the countless local residents who reached out urging me to seek this position. I am ready on day one to run an effective, efficient and competent operation at Town Hall,” said Schmitt. “Each and every day that I serve as Town Supervisor I will put the interests of all New Windsor residents first. Using my unmatched experience in local government I will work to deliver affordability through conservative fiscal management and taxpayer relief, economic development to fill our empty storefronts, public safety and preservation of our community and natural resources for every corner of our town. I am asking for everyone’s vote on Republican Primary Day June 27 and General Election Day November 7.”

Schmitt previously served in the New York State Assembly representing the 99th District, which includes New Windsor, starting back in 2019. After several terms, Schmitt went on to pursue a seat in Congress but would lose the race to Democrat Patrick Ryan. Schmitt has served in the U.S. Army National Guard and is a graduate of the Catholic University of America. According to his announcement, Schmitt shared that over 400 signatures were collected for his petitions, and this will be his first bid for the seat of supervisor.

Schmitt joined the New Windsor town government during Supervisor George Green’s tenure where he served as Chief of Staff/Executive Assistant to the Supervisor. However, this position has been scrutinized by the current administration which claimed he did not serve in the role and was employed for less than a year. Schmitt was also reported to have been appointed as the Director of Finance in March for the Town of Clarkstown by Town Supervisor George Hoehmann, which was also met with scrutiny and questions from the town officials on his qualifications.

Schmitt has picked up the suppert of New Windsor Highway Superintendent Anthony Fayo and former Deputy Supervisors Pat Mullarkey and Alice Biasotti.

“There is no more qualified candidate for this critical position living in the Town today than Colin,” Fayo said.

“Colin Schmitt has my full support to be our next Town Supervisor. I served on the Town Board for many years and know it takes a strong, competent leader who residents can rely on to be our Chief Executive. I can guarantee you that Colin Schmit is exactly what we need at this time,” said Biasotti.
