Scouts assist at local cemeteries

Numerous volunteers met May 21 at the New Windsor American Legion at 9 a.m. for a light breakfast, hosted by New Windsor’s Sons of the American Legion.

Volunteers were broken up into groups to place flags at Calvary Cemetery, Saint Francis and Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ironically Troop 28 was assigned to Calvary Cemetery where several family members of the troop are buried.  Joe Ponesse was able to place a flag on his grandfather Thomas Ponesse’s grave.  He served in the US Army in Korea. Also buried at Calvary Cemetery is his great uncle, Louis J. Ponesse (US Army).

The troop also placed a flag on Alexander S. Howard’s grave.  Alexander honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He is the father of Assistant Scoutmaster Ed Howard and the grandfather to Assistant Scoutmaster Alex Howard and Life Scout Aiden Howard.

Troop 28 also participated in the New Windsor Memorial Day parade the next day.
