SUNY Orange welcomes summer with astronomical event

It’s June! Summer Solstice is soon. Now in 2023, Astronomy Night is scheduled at SUNY Orange, Middletown campus. This exciting educational event is set for June 21 starting at 8:15pm. In case of inclement weather – rain or cloud cover dates: June 28 or 29.

Come to Alumni Green in the center of the campus.
Bring your lawn chairs. View planets, the moon and constellations.

Astronomy professor Tom Blon has planned a full program. Planet and moon globes will be on display as well as a scale model of the conjunction. He will explain what solstice is.

As the sky darkens, constellations will be introduced as they appear.

Six astronomers besides Blon will be at telescopes which will point to different targets. They are:
William Istone, PhD, Professor of Astronomy & Chemistry
Irene Pease, former President of Amateur Astronomers Association of NYC; a Hayden Planetarium Associate
John Kocijanski, facilitator of Catskills Astronomy Meetup Group; retired Monroe-Woodbury HS Astronomy & Earth Science teacher Dustin McCall, PhD, Professor of Chemistry
Anthony Soricelli, Professor of Earth Science & Geology

Bill Polakowski, backyard astronomer; IT Specialist, Crestron DMC-E

Also, Library Director and astrophotographer Andy Heiz will demonstrate.

Questions are welcome!
