Town of Newburgh set to welcome Tesla

Tesla, the renowned electrical vehicle manufacturer owned by Elon Musk, announced on July 18 by the Orange County Partnership that it would be making the Town of Newburgh their home for a new company distribution center.

The home of this distribution center will be a new 927,000 square foot warehouse located along Route 300, built and designed by Matrix Development Group. Another warehouse was also built adjacent but only at 215,000 square feet. No tenant had been identified.

Town of Newburgh Supervisor Gil Piaquadio said he will be meeting with company representatives to learn more about their work in the town and at the facility.

Conor Eckert, Senior Development Officer and VP of Business Attraction for the Orange County Partnership, shared his enthusiasm on the signing of Tesla. Three hundred potential jobs could be possible with this signing.

“The Tesla project sends a clear message that Orange County is a dynamic and strategic location for industrial development in the Northeast,” he said. “I would say Tesla is going to be a catalyst for our economic development efforts. This is just the latest example of another Fortune 500 choosing our markets.”

As a manufacturer of electric vehicles, Tesla enters a state that is looking towards renewable and clean energy. For Eckert, he says that the partnership and economic development community are looking to attract those types of companies and manufacturers.

As a new company enters the county, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus sees the creation of employment/manufacturing jobs and sales and property taxes being generated from this signing. A previous member of the Orange County Land Trust and an environmentalist, Neuhaus shared that the county has been moving towards adjusting to the new technology and cleaner energy with installing car charging stations but is looking for more ways to bring about these changes.

“Electric cars are the future and Tesla, that company has a very good reputation, and it is a household name,” said Neuhaus. “I think it’s gonna be a great opportunity for the county and the region.”

Tesla, headquartered in Austin, Texas, was incorporated in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors. The company’s name is a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Musk became the company’s largest hareholder in 2004, after a reported investment of $6.5 million. He became the company’s CEO in 2008.
