Statewide closure of shopping malls take effect Thursday

Posted

One day ahead of a statewide order order mandating the closure of shopping malls, Woodbury Common will close its doors.

State Senator James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced Wednesday that Simon Properties agreed to close down the mall at least until March 29. Stores were due to close at 7 p.m.

"Although I think the mall should have been shut down some time ago, I thank these stakeholders for listening to the concerns of our community and taking these steps.," said Skoufis who on Monday, had called on Governr Andrew M. Cuomo to close outlet malls throughout the state. “This closing is the responsible thing to do from a public health standpoint, however, I urge companies to do the right thing and continue providing wages to those laid off or furloughed due to circumstances beyond their control. Corporate social responsibility is an absolute must right now and we all have a role to play in resolving this crisis.”

On Wednesday, Cuomo announced that Governor Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania jad joined the governors of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania in a coalition to combat COVID-19. That coalition has mandated that bars and restaurants be limited to take out only, and that all gyms, movie theatres and casinos be closed. Effective 8 p..m. Thursday, all indoor portions of shopping malls, amusement parks and bowling alleys will also close.
