Anthony Joseph “Tony” Marino peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 30, 2023 with his family by his side.
Born in Foligno, Italy on September 14, 1931, he migrated to the U.S. at only 5 months old with his parents, Angelo and Palmina, and older sister, Rosie. The family would eventually settle in the Bronx where he grew up, having many great stories to share (think of the movie A Bronx Tale).
Tony was “the jack of all trades” and held various jobs throughout his life. He dropped out of high school to work at his father’s butcher shop, had co-owned a corner store with A Bronx Tale star Eddie Mush, worked as a corrections officer on Rikers Island, and was a Little League baseball coach and manager – just to name a few.
Tony was always the life of the party – telling funny (often inappropriate!) jokes any chance he could get. Known for grabbing the “mic” at family and friend functions to sing his favorite Italian songs, he made people smile with his amazing voice, and his little lyrical spins. He and Pat would tear up the dance floor like no other couple could! Grandpa/Pop Pop always found great joy in making his grandkids laugh with his silly facial antics and card tricks. Dad also cooked the best chicken cutlets.
He proudly served his country as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal . In the 1960’s, he joined the FDNY where he served for more than 25 years, forging many strong bonds with his “Brothers.” Additionally, he was a member of the Maybrook VFW Post 2064,was a Life Member of UNICO and in 2011 earned the Man of the Year Award for designing a T-shirt commemorating 9/11 to raise money for charity.
Tony was an avid, lifelong NY Yankees fan and literally watched all games, be them “live” or in replay. He also loved Burger King, his go to place. Tony loved to golf. It was his favorite pastime which he was still doing at 91! He was also a devout Catholic.
Tony is survived by his loyal wife of 45 years, Patricia (Phillips) Marino, and his six children, Anthony (Tony/Butch), his wife Cristen and their children, Jessica, Dezi, Chelsee, Jenna and great grandchildren, Nolan, Cole, Logan and Lucas; his daughter Michele and her sons, Christian and Jacob; his daughter Renee’ (Darcy) McComb, her husband Pete and their children, Joseph and Jenna; son Nicholas, his wife Alyssa and their children, Nicholas and Nina; and daughters Carene Palma and Gina Marie Marino, as well as extended family and close friends who are considered family.
Visitation will take place between 4 and 7pm on Thursday, July 6, at Overhiser Funeral Home, 78 Union Street, Montgomery A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2023 at Holy Name of Mary Assumption Church, 89 Union Street, Montgomery. Internment services at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, will immediately follow.
The family would like to send special thanks to the Garnet Health nursing and support staff on 3N, the Garnet Health Palliative Care team and the “angels” of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan County who all provided excellent care to Dad/Grandpa/Pop Pop.
