Caleb Sahlstrom finished second and Laura Griffin was third as the Valley Central boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams lost to the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks by identical scores of 22-33 on October 17 at Chadwick Lake Park in Newburgh.

Newburgh’s Brady Danyluk won the boys’ race with a time of 15:57 and Natalia Sweat won the girls’ race with a time of 19:59.

Caleb Sahlstrom led the Vikings’ boys team with a second-place finish in 16:00. Vance Palmer was fourth. Ashton Ewald, Isaiah Tejada and Jack Dudzik were eighth through 10th for the Vikings.

Laura Griffin led the Valley Central girls’ team with a third-place finish in 20:45 with Sydney Remenar coming in behind her with a fourth-place finish. Emily Frank was seventh and Isabella Cruz and Grace Burns were ninth and 10th respectively.

The teams will compete on Saturday at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championship meet at Sanfordville Elementary School in Warwick.
