Greenlight Networks, a fiber network service provider based in Monroe County, announced on February 13 that the company partnered with the Town of Wallkill and will provide broadband services to the hamlets of Mechanicstown and Circleville later this year, marking the company’s first expansion in the Hudson Valley.

The company, founded in 2011, currently services 170,000 homes in Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Rochester. Its bread and butter, fiber network, transmits data through glass strands coated in plastic, resulting in faster and more efficient connections without the problems that cable networks may have.

“By using the speed of light, we can transmit data much faster than we could over traditional buyers. They’re less prone to ingress or other issues that traditional cable would have to deal with,” Murphy said in a recent interview. “Folks that have chronic speed issues, or other issues with call strapping and things like that, that doesn’t happen with fiber optics.”

For its recent expansion, Greenlight Networks has worked with officials from Wallkill and Orange County, including the town’s fire department. The company chose Mechanicstown and Circleville due to being optimal locations for its operations.

“We’re serving what we call Wallkill, Victory, Green Lake District, and we’re going to serve Circle, Disco, and Mabel later in the spring,” Murphy said, referring to the hamlets’ neighborhoods. “The two locations just had good proximity to those locations where we could use our equipment and get to those customers as quickly as possible.”
Currently, the company is working with utility companies to install transmission poles for its fiber network. Once the polls are completed, the company can begin building a network within 30 to 60 days and will likely begin servicing customers in late spring.
“Between now and mid-year is when we expect that first bunch of customers in the areas to begin getting service,” Murphy said. “The first 500 or so should begin getting service in the next 30 to 60 days.”

Greenlight Networks also hosted a community event on February 20 at the Mechanicstown Fire District, where representatives greeted residents, answered questions, and offered free installation to anyone who signed up during the event. Overall, the company and parties involved are very happy with the expansion and look forward to working together.
