Maybrook raising water rates

For the first time since 2013, Maybrook is raising water rates. After a recent public hearing, the village board unanimously approved a water rate increase of ten cents per thousand gallons, bringing the new rate to $4.25 per thousand gallons for residential customers.

Mayor Dennis Leahy said the average household uses 25,000 gallons per quarter. Under the old rate of $4.15, the amount charged would be $103.75. Under the new rate of $4.25, the bill will be $106.25, an increase of $2.50 per quarter ($10 a year).

There will also be a water surcharge rate increase of 75 cents, to $5. The business rate will go up 13 cents, to a new rate of $4.70. Outside-village resident users will see an 11-cent increase, to $5.

The increases are to remedy a deficit in the village water fund, caused by an increase in utility and supply fees, and to ensure water fund expenditures are met by the revenue. In addition, said village Public Works Superintendent Matthew Thorp, the water fund must be self-sufficient in order to apply for various government grants.
