Montgomery considers tax exemptions for volunteers

A new state law allows municipalities the option to grant property tax exemptions of up to 10 percent to volunteer first responders. The Village of Montgomery is considering it.

Village Attorney Will Frank told village trustees last week that the measure was recently enacted at the state level. Several other area municipalities, including New Paltz and New Windsor, are reportedly considering the measure as well.

Frank said if the village board approved the measure, it would only apply to village residents and would only apply to village property taxes, not town or school taxes. The measure is only for volunteer firefighters and ambulance corps members, not professionals.

“We’ll definitely consider it,” Mayor Steve Brescia promised.
