Kudos to the Walden Rotary Club. On August 18 this great organization capped off a 14 month project to ship school supplies, classroom furniture, medical equipment and supplies, sports equipment, clothing and other items requested by the Vassar Health Project for villages in the mountainous region of Chermaitre, Haiti. The project grew out of a previous commitment by the Rotary to help underwrite a medical testing laboratory for a Medical Clinic started by the Vassar Haiti Project and the Rotary Club of Gonaives, Haiti.
Rotarians Mike Bliss, Keith Hunter and Peter Sullivan organized an extensive effort to raise funds and solicit donated items. They filled a 15 X 15 storage area with hospital linens; donated sports balls; new backpacks, tablets, etc., soccer balls and hand pumps and needles, classroom chalk and erasers, donated wheel chairs and walkers, clothing, and toys.
Commitment was received from two school districts to donate over 100 pieces of obsolete furniture from closed schools. Due to either civil unrest or the pandemic, there was a 10-month delay to get goods shipped to Haiti. On August 18, 20+ individuals descended on the Montgomery Self-Storage Facility and carefully stacked 20 boxes and items in a 40 ft. container. Happily this project came to a successful end.
