Pine Bush School Board salutes athletes, thespians

Applause and cheers filled the June 13 Pine Bush school board meeting as the board recognized student-athletes, thespians, scholars and new personnel.

Mike Gillespie, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics, started the parade of honorees by congratulating Lisa Sorrentino, field hockey coach, who is retiring after 36 years of coaching. Gillespie noted that Pine Bush has the only field hockey team in Orange County and so the team had to travel to Ulster and Dutchess counties and further north to play its games. Sorrentino also coached softball for 17 years and basketball for a number of years.

After Gillespie called out each of 192 scholar-athletes, who shook hands with school board members, they received their pins and certificates. To be a scholar-athlete, varsity athletes must have a grade point average of 90 or above.

Robin Evans, Music Department Chair, then saluted the more than 150 students who participated in Pine Bush Theater: Little Mermaid, Jr. on the elementary school stage, Willy Wonka, Jr. on the middle school stage and Rent on the high school stage.

The board will hold its reorganizational meeting on July 7.
