Revella reminds property owners to maintain water/sewer laterals

John Revella, Village Manager of Walden, has issued a reminder to all property owners in the Village regarding their responsibility to maintain their water and sewer laterals. These pipes run from the main line in the street, which are the responsibility of the homeowner, into the building and can require costly repairs from time to time.

“As a property owner in the Village of Walden, it is important to understand that you are responsible for maintaining your water and sewer laterals,” says Revella. “While the costs associated with repairs can be expensive, it is worth noting that there are insurance and warranty companies that offer coverage for different types of repair work.”

Revella goes on to state that while the Village is not permitted to make recommendations as to what coverage may be best for the property owners, he wants to make sure that they are aware that coverage is available and encourages them to undertake further investigation to determine what choice is appropriate for their individual situation.

In recent months, at least one insurance company had approached the village about hosting a seminar on insuring water and sewer lines. The village board, on advice of its attorney, turned down the request, fearing they may appear to be endorsing one particular business.

“We understand that the costs associated with repairs can be a concern, and we want to make sure that all property owners are informed of the options available to them,” adds Revella. “Investigating insurance or warranty options may help mitigate a potential costly expense in the future.”
