Shawangunk burn ban lifted

The burn ban in the Town of Shawangunk was lifted on Wednesday afternoon, Supervisor John Valk said.

Valk said the heavy rains over the last several days led to the decision.

“The vegetation is greening up,” Valk said Wednesday.

Due to the recent drought conditions, Valk declared a state of emergency on Aug. 28 that banned all outdoor burning in the town. He said it was necessary to prevent potential wildfires due to the extremely dry conditions in the town.

Police chief Gerald Marlatt reported at the Sept. 1 Town Board meeting that police went to a residence to tell the inhabitants that they needed to put a bonfire out. He didn’t mention any other violations.
