Wallkill’s Louis Martinez was hopeful he would do something big during the state track qualifier in Middletown Friday, and the pole-vaulter’s ability matched his confidence on that day.

“I just got a new pole,” he said. “When I jumped 14-5, I was (far) above it.”

Martinez qualified for the state meet, competing a very familiar pit, at Middletown this weekend when he cleared 15-feet during the qualifier.

Romaine Bird, Martinez’s teammate, won the long jump, covering 21-feet, nine inches, to qualify for the state meet in Division 1.

For the Wallkill girls, Sam Rodriguez won the 100 and 200-meter dashes to qualify, and Valley Central’s Bianca Staples also qualified after winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.92.

Pine Bush’s Taylor Pannell qualified after winning the high, long and triple jumps. AnJalyna Talmadge, Pannell’s teammate, won the pentathlon with 2,180 points to qualify for the state meet.

Pine Bush’s Matt Hellig won the discus, covering 147-feet, nine inches, and the javelin, to qualify. Kenny Holland, Hellig’s teammate, won the triple jump, covering 44-feet, 10 and half inches, to qualify. Brandon DeJesus also qualified for Pine Bush in the 100-meter dash.

Valley Central’s Mason Davis won the shot put covering 52-feet, eight inches, to also qualify for the state meet.
