Town of Montgomery considers term extension for supervisor

Posted

Only a couple of weeks after the Town of Crawford announced a potential local law extending term lengths, the Town of Montgomery followed suit, beginning the conversation about the town supervisor role increasing from two years to four.

The change would begin in 2025 and, according to Town of Montgomery Supervisor Ron Feller, the public would get to vote on this in November.

Feller, who was appointed to the position in January when former Supervisor Brian Maher was elected to the State Assembly, isn’t running in November. Montgomery Mayor L. Stephen Brescia is the Republican-endorsed candidate to replace him.

“I’ve heard comments on both sides. I personally have been in this position for six months and I personally feel it would be good to be a four year term because [after] whatever you’re doing one year, the next year you’re campaigning again if you’re a campaigner. It’s the way to go,” Feller said.

Crawford Town Supervisor Charles Carnes had similar beliefs. The idea is that by the time you get settled in your position, you’re already working to get elected again.

The winner of the upcoming November election, however, would not be affected, but would serve a two year term. If the law is adopted, it would affect the outcome of the 2025 election.
