Valley Central celebrates 2023 commencement

This past rainy Saturday, Valley Central High School held their 65th annual commencement. Friends, family and loved ones gathered in the high school’s gymnasium to celebrate the class of 2023.

Despite the rainy day, the bleachers were packed, and everyone was still ecstatic to watch the ceremony.

At 10 a.m., audience members rose to watch Valley Central students slowly march toward their seats to “Pomp and Circumstance.” After a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by senior class choir members, the Pledge of Allegiance from Senior Class Dean Brian Quinn and an Invocation from Senior Class President Azaziah Marshall, everyone returned to their seats.

Codi Rumsey, Valley Central’s 2023 salutatorian, then gave a speech. Rumsey explained how important her support system was to her.

“Every person needs a support system who helps to build them up into the person that they are today. I encourage you all to take the time to thank everyone who has helped you on your journey,” said Rumsey.

Following this, Valley Central High School Principal Russell Burns gave a presentation of awards, noting that this year students received a total of $103,026,265 in scholarships and awards. He also recognized the new members of their National Honor Society, as well as honoring retirees, faculty, senior class advisors, administration and more.

Up next, Valley Central Valedictorian Femi Yusuff gave his speech, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.

“The actions of even just one person now affects all of our lives, and if you want to survive, do not sink the ship. Do not be the worst version of yourself, do not make the wrong decision,” said Yusuff.

There were then words from Principal Burns, Superintendent of Schools Evette Avila and Board of Education President Joseph Bond. All wished well for graduates, with Avila specifically mentioning this was her first graduating class.

She also mentioned that this class uniquely went through unprecedented times, and because of their commitment, they persevered.

“You will go down in history for being resilient, using technology in new and innovative ways and overcoming many complex obstacles. You have succeeded and are here today because of your commitment,” said Avila.

Then, teachers Stephanie Hernandez and David Miller announced the name of each graduating student as they received their diploma.

After turning their tassels, they threw their caps up high and walked out to “The Masterpiece” to greet their families and celebrate.
