Frederick Gorss has been named Village of Montgomery Assistant Judge after the resignation of Acting Justice Stewart Rosenwasser.

Gorss was assigned to the position on June 18.

Gorss said his decades of experience in law will be an asset as he steps into his new role.

“I have experience, being town judge, with all types of cases,” Gorss said. “I look forward to utilizing that experience.”

Gorss has been the Town of Montgomery justice since January of 1996 and has 45 years of experience as a practicing attorney. He has felony and misdemeanor trial experience and experience in all types of cases, including landlord and tenant cases, civil and criminal cases, vehicle and traffic and more.

In his 24 years on the court, Gorss led the charge in obtaining state grants for a court recording system, metal detector, shredder, computers, printers, copiers and more; improved the efficiency of the court procedure; and worked with a school mock trial tournament as a judge.

Gorss attended Valley Central High School, Utica College of Syracuse University and Suffolk University Law School.

Gorss said he is familiar with the village court through the arraignment process with town court. If a town judge is not available for an arraignment, a village judge can fill in, and vice versa.

Gorss said he was honored to receive the appointment from Village of Montgomery Mayor Stephen Brescia and the village board.

“I pride myself on maintaining the constitutional balance between respect for the individual with the rule of law and order in our community,” Gorss said.

Rosenwasser resigned to take a position in the public sector and avoid a conflict of interest at his new position, according to his resignation letter.
