Youthful Viking swimmers fall to Newburgh

Valley Central’s boys swimming team traveled to Newburgh Thursday, and the older Goldback squad stopped the younger visitors 102-77.

Luke Roberts won the 200-freestyle for Valley Central with a time of 2:16.30. Nick Suchy followed that up with a victory in the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.93. At the diving break, Dan Harrington won that competition with 241.70 points for the Vikings.

The Vikings, without a senior on the team, took the top three spots in the 100-backstroke and the 100-breastroke, but the Goldbacks swam those events in exhibition.

“We know what they have. They are a little stronger and deeper than we are,” said Scott Warner, Valley Central’s coach. “We’re young. We’re going to take some on the chin for a couple of years. And then we’ll come back and be a lot stronger.”

The Goldbacks won three relays, 200-medley relay and 200 and 400-freestyle relays. And the Goldbacks went 1-2-3 in many individual events by stopping the Vikings 102-77.

“We are a little bit older,” said Zach Williams, Newburgh’s coach. “In high school swimming, you can win the event and lose points. It’s imperative you have another guy to back you up in every event.”

That happened for Aleksey Makarov in the 100-butterfly. He won the event with a time of 53.26. Fellow Goldback Martin Peticco was second about eight seconds later. Leo Belcher was third for the Goldbacks in the event with a time of 1:04.16

In the 100-freestyle, Devin Triller led a 1-2-3 sweep with a winning time of 52.96. Luka Samsonov won the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:52.98 and the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:59.01. In a rare tie, Newburgh’s Kyle German and Anthony Etri-Maughn were both third in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:42.40.
