Rallying for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

September is more than just the start of fall—it’s a crucial time for raising awareness about ovarian cancer, a relentless disease that claims the lives of far too many women each year. As we observe Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, it’s vital that we come together to spread the word about the risks, promote prevention, and demand more scientific research to advance toward a cure.

Ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it’s too late, earning it the grim nickname “the silent killer.” The symptoms can be subtle—bloating, pelvic pain, and changes in appetite—making early detection difficult. This year alone, thousands of women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and many will lose their lives to it. Yet, with greater awareness and more robust research, we can change these outcomes.

The story of Corinne Feller, a life-long resident of Montgomery, reminds us why this fight is so important. A standout student and athlete at Valley Central High School, Corinne was known for her generosity, fairness, and social consciousness. But at just 18 years old, her life was tragically cut short by ovarian cancer after a 10-month battle in 1999. Corinne’s untimely death shed light on the urgent need for heightened awareness about this devastating disease and underscored the necessity of increased funding for research.

Corinne’s legacy lives on through the Corinne Feller Memorial Fund and the Corinne Feller Scholarship Fund, both of which work to honor her memory by supporting ovarian cancer research and helping young people achieve their academic dreams. These funds are not just a tribute to Corinne’s life but a rallying cry for all of us to take action in the fight against ovarian cancer. Donations to these funds can be sent to the Community Foundation of Orange County, where they will help fuel the ongoing battle against this silent killer.

As we move through September, let us remember Corinne and the countless others who have been affected by ovarian cancer. Let’s commit to spreading awareness, supporting research, and ultimately finding a cure. Every woman deserves the chance to live a long, healthy life, free from the threat of ovarian cancer. Together, we can make that vision a reality.
