By Frank Phillips, Former Orange County District Attorney
I am pleased to endorse Anthony LoBiondo for Town of Newburgh Justice.
I know Anthony and his qualifications firsthand. As Orange County District Attorney, I had the opportunity to work closely with Anthony during the time he served as an Assistant District Attorney in my office, from 1991 through 1997.
During his years in my office, Anthony was entrusted with assignments in the Local Court Unit, Appeals Unit, White Collar Crime Unit and Violent Felony Unit. He prosecuted serious criminal matters and tried numerous cases to verdict, including violent felonies and serious drug related crimes.
Anthony also handled a particularly difficult prosecution and jury trial involving the serious physical abuse and scalding of a mentally ill patient at the Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center. He was also responsible for a significant narcotics investigation involving drug dealing connected to Camp LaGuardia in Chester, which resulted in the indictment and ultimate conviction of dozens of individuals. Anthony personally presented these cases to the Grand Jury.
As Anthony gained experience in the office, I entrusted him with additional responsibility, including serving as the supervisor of the Orange County District Attorney’s satellite office in the City of Newburgh. In that position, he supervised other Assistant District Attorneys, and the prosecution of cases arising in one of the busiest criminal courts in Orange County.
These were significant responsibilities for a young prosecutor. During the years Anthony worked for me, I came to know him not only as a capable attorney and prosecutor, but as a person of good character, honesty and integrity. He demonstrated sound judgment, treated people with respect, and possessed the patience, fairness and even temperament that I believe are essential qualities in a judge.
Since leaving the District Attorney’s Office in 1997, Anthony has spent nearly three decades in private practice, representing individuals in criminal matters as well as handling civil litigation. That experience has given him the valuable perspective of having served on both sides of the courtroom and an understanding that every person who enters a courtroom deserves to be treated fairly and with dignity and respect.
Anthony has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to his community. A lifelong Town of Newburgh resident, he has served on the Town Board since 2020 and as the Board’s liaison to the Town Court.
I knew Anthony when he began his career as a young prosecutor more than three decades ago, and I have watched his professional career and service to his community since that time. His extensive courtroom experience, knowledge of the law, honesty, integrity, sound judgment and judicial temperament make him exceptionally well qualified to serve as Town Justice.
I am proud to endorse Anthony LoBiondo for Town of Newburgh Justice and encourage the voters of the Town of Newburgh to support him this November.
