On September 17, Americans will officially observe Constitution Day, the day in 1787 that delegates signed the United States Constitution. Today, America is in crisis, and citizens who are struggling may barely notice this observance. They may even think that the constitution is not relevant to their day to day lives. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Most Americans believe big money in our politics leads to corruption. When politicians accept vast sums of cash from billionaires, super PACS, and foreign governments, it removes the ability of we, the people, to shape our government through elections. That’s where the constitution becomes relevant. It provides a way to take back the right to regulate election spending. That right was removed from congress and the states by a series of decisions by the Supreme Court.
A constitutional amendment that has been proposed in the House of Representatives will give back this right. This summer, Republican Representative Tom Barrett of Michigan and Democratic Representative Ro Khana of California co-sponsored H.J. Res. 191, the Constitutional Campaign Finance Reform Amendment.
This amendment will allow election spending regulations and is popular on both sides of the political spectrum. So far, the legislators in half of all states have voted to support it, the last three of which were Republican. If you would like to see big money out of our elections, now is the time to act. Contact your representative in congress and ask that they become a co-sponsor of this important amendment.
