Cyclones win Elite tournament

It’s been a long run for the New Windsor 18U baseball team, and for many of them it’s ending.

The Cyclones have been together for about five years coming up together since they were a 13U team, and they are making the most of what is the final season for many of their players.

The Cyclones’ highlight of the season so far was on July 10 when they won the New York Elite Baseball Pitch for Kids tournament.

The Cyclones went 1-1 in Pool Play, beating the Valley Pirates, 16-9, and losing, 8-2, to Santos baseball on July 9. However, they got their revenge on Santos, the following day with an 8-5 victory to clinch their berth in the tournament championship.

The Cyclones beat another local team – the Newburgh Knights – 12-4, to win the tournament championship.

The Knights tied Valley Pirates, 3-3, and lost to the Connecticut Red Tails Grey, 4-0. Then in the semifinals, they beat the Pirates, 10-0.

The Cyclones’ victory in the Pitch for Kids tournament came about a month after their runner-up finish in the Battle of the Bats at the Town of Newburgh Little League Complex.

After winning their first three tournament games, the Cyclones suffered a 9-0 loss to the Hudson Valley Wolverines in the championship game at Cronomer Park.
They opened the tournament on June 11 with a 2-1 win over the Red Hawks in Pool Play and followed that up with a 6-0 win over the Sandlot Baseball Academy. They came back on June 12 with a 6-2 semifinal victory over the Orleans Outlaws.

Last year, the Cyclones played in the Greater Hudson Valley Baseball League last season and won the High School Division 3 championship after entering the tournament as the No. 8 seed.

It was a tournament full of upsets for the Cyclones as they beat the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 seeds to win the championship game. They were the High School runners-up in the spring.

Brian Casale, Tommy Lennon and Roger Paretta coach the team.
