Democracy beware

In last Thursday’s presidential debate a moderator asked Trump if he would accept the election results come November. Trump said he would if the election is fair and legal. In Trumpian language his reply means if he wins, it’s fair and legal but if he loses, it’s not and he won’t accept the results.

To support my coined Trumpian language phrase, let me continue with some commentary. I have been reading many articles concerning the upcoming 2024 presidential election, a few on project 2025, the stark, extreme authoritarian blueprint for Trump’s governance if he is re-elected but there is one article anchored with a huge red flag of particular concern. It is a Huffington Post article on a secretly recorded audio obtained by journalist Lauren Windsor. The audio is of Roger Stone, a political operative and Trump confidant, detailing Republican plans to successfully challenge the 2024 election results should Trump lose to President Biden. Stone stressed the Trump team is much more prepared than four years ago and is already on an “ offensive footing “ with lawyers, judges and technology at its disposal if needed when the time comes. In his speech Stone perpetuated Trump’s 2020 election lie when he claimed the election could “be stolen again” and he wasn’t currently “totally confident’ about how the vote would actually play out. He made it clear there is much more money ( for lawsuits, audits, etc ) that can be spent on fighting for Trump now that his daughter-in-law, Lara, is co-chair of the Republican National Committee.

All the aforementioned remarks were made by Roger Stone who was the keynote speaker at a Trump event held back on March 19 at Mar-a-Lago. There you have it, people. It appears there could yet be another attempted government coup if the election wind does not blow in Trump’s favor. Footnote: Trump, in the final days of his presidency, pardoned Roger Stone of his 40-month prison sentence for witness-tampering and lying to Congress.
